If you need reissuance of a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) in Vietnam, this procedure applies when your card is lost, damaged, or contains incorrect information. The reissuance process requires valid supporting documents, an eligible sponsor, and a passport with sufficient remaining validity. Applications are submitted through the provincial Immigration Office, with a standard processing time of up to 15 working days.
Your TRC is damaged (cracked, unreadable, broken chip/lamination)
Your TRC details no longer match your current information (e.g., passport number changed, personal details updated)
Reissuing the card helps you keep a clear legal status while staying in Vietnam and prevents avoidable issues during travel, hotel registration, banking, or administrative procedures.

To apply for TRC reissuance, the foreign national generally needs to meet these conditions:
The foreigner has a valid basis to reside in Vietnam and the TRC type remains appropriate (work, investment, family, etc.)
The foreigner’s passport is valid for at least 1 year
The intended TRC validity is aligned with supporting documents (work permit, investment documents, marriage/birth certificates, etc.)
In practice, Immigration will also check whether the sponsor/host entity is compliant and whether the foreigner’s current stay status is consistent with the reissuance request.
Marriage certificate / Birth certificate (for family-based TRC), etc.
If the TRC is lost: an explanation letter about the loss, or a loss notice from the sponsoring organization (depending on the case and local practice)
Because requirements can vary slightly by province/city and by TRC category, it’s best to have the file checked before submission to avoid a return for corrections.
Gather documents based on your TRC type (work/investment/family) and the reason for reissuance (lost/damaged/info change). Missing one item often means your file won’t be accepted on the first submission.
Step 2: Submit at the provincial Immigration Office
The sponsoring organization/individual submits the file at the Immigration Management Office (Phòng Quản lý xuất nhập cảnh) under the provincial/municipal Police Department where the foreigner is temporarily residing.
Immigration officers will review the file:
If the file is complete and valid, you will receive an appointment receipt and instructions to pay the fee. After payment, you receive a payment receipt.
If the file is incomplete or not valid, you will be guided to revise and resubmit.
Step 3: Receive the reissued temporary residence card
When collecting the result, bring:
The appointment receipt
The fee payment receipt
Any required originals for final verification (if requested)
The officer will verify the recipient’s information and request a signature upon receiving the new TRC.
Tan Van Lang provides professional Temporary Residence Card consultation services for foreigners in Vietnam.
Reissuance processing time is commonly up to 15 working days from the date Immigration receives a complete and valid file.
Timelines can be affected by peak periods, public holidays, and whether your sponsor’s documents or the foreigner’s supporting documents require additional verification.
Fees for reissuing a Vietnam temporary residence card
Below are the fee levels commonly applied (in USD), based on TRC validity:
TRC valid up to 1 year: 60 USD
TRC valid over 1 year to 2 years: 80 USD
TRC valid over 2 years to 3 years: 100 USD
Fees may be updated by the competent authority from time to time. If you want us to confirm the fee for your exact TRC category and location, contact Tân Văn Lang via hotline 08.666.000.63 (WhatsApp) .
Keep passport validity comfortably above the minimum
As a rule of thumb, make sure your passport remains valid for at least 13 months at the time of filing, especially if you expect a longer TRC validity.
For employees: check work permit/work permit exemption validity
For foreign employees, the work permit or work permit exemption certificate should typically remain valid for at least 12 months.
If the remaining validity is shorter, Immigration may require you to switch status (for example, use an appropriate visa instead of a TRC, depending on your case).
For investors and family-based TRCs: validity caps still apply
Investor TRCs and family-based TRCs may be reissued with validity similar to (or longer than) the previous card, but still subject to legal caps (commonly not exceeding 5 years, depending on TRC type and supporting basis).
Lost or damaged TRC requires a clear written explanation
If your TRC is lost or damaged, include a detailed explanation of how it happened. Inconsistent or vague explanations can slow down the review.
FAQ about reissuing a temporary residence card in Vietnam
Can I extend my TRC instead of reissuing it?

You submit at the Immigration Management Office (Phòng Quản lý xuất nhập cảnh) of the provincial/municipal Police Department where the foreigner is temporarily residing.
